SCOPE OF ARTICLES
Developmental Neurobiology (previously the Journal of Neurobiology ) publishes original research articles on development, regeneration, repair and plasticity of the nervous system and on the ontogeny of behavior. High quality contributions in these areas are solicited, with an emphasis on experimental as opposed to purely descriptive work. The Journal also will consider manuscripts reporting novel approaches and techniques for the study of the development of the nervous system as well as occasional special issues on topics of significant current interest. We welcome suggestions on possible topics from our readers.
Papers that do not conform to the general criteria for publication in Developmental Neurobiology will be returned immediately without detailed review in order to avoid unnecessary delay in submission elsewhere.
ACCELERATED PUBLICATION

Editors will consider for accelerated publication full-length manuscripts that report new and important findings in neurobiology. Authors must write a cover letter requesting accelerated publication and must indicate why the manuscript deserves priority. The names, addresses (including E-mail), telephone and fax numbers of six potential reviewers must be included with the submission. Editors will render a decision on chosen manuscripts within 3 weeks of submission. Publication will occur online within 3 months from the date of acceptance. Online submissions must indicate the above request and justification in the Comments to Editor screen on the website.
NPRC

Developmental Neurobiology is a member of the Neuroscience Peer Review Consortium. The Consortium is an alliance of neuroscience journals that have agreed to accept manuscript reviews from each other. If you submit a revision of your manuscript to another Consortium journal, we can forward the reviews of your manuscript to that journal, should you decide this might be helpful. You can find a list of Consortium journals and details about forwarding reviews at http://nprc.incf.org

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUBMITTING MANUSCRIPTS FOR PEER REVIEW

Developmental Neurobiology offers web-based peer review. We strongly encourage authors to submit their manuscripts to our online-submission and peer-review website at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/neuro-wiley Manuscripts submitted online are received on the day of submission and quickly assigned to reviewers. Through individual Author Centers on this website, authors can view the status of their manuscripts as they progress through the review process. Notification of the disposition of each manuscript will be sent by E-mail to the corresponding author on the day of decision.
To establish your account for online submission, go to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/neuro-wiley. If you are unsure about whether or not you have an account, or have forgotten your password, enter your E-mail address into the Password Help section on the log-in page. If you do not have an account, click on the Create Account link on the top of the log-in page. You then will be able to submit and monitor the progress of your manuscripts.
To submit your manuscript online, please prepare the text and illustrations according to the instructions listed below. You may enter and exit the manuscript submission process at the completion of each step, and you may leave an unfinished draft in the system and continue to work on it. Once you submit your manuscript, however, you will not be able to edit it. If you have any questions about this process, please contact us at dneuadmin@wiley.com
Please note that Scholar One Manuscripts does not accept a single file upload from the author. Text, tables, and figures will need to be uploaded individually. Do not embed figures or tables in the document.
Text format: Please submit documents in .doc or .rtf formats only.
Figure format: Please submit figures in .tif or .eps formats only
To ensure that your digital graphics are suitable for print purposes, please go to RapidInspector™ athttp://rapidinspector.cadmus.com/zwi/index.jsp . This free, stand-alone software application will help you to inspect and verify illustrations right on your computer.
Authors in Japan may ask Wiley-Japan for a list of recommended services for checking and improving English. Please contact Yoko Kobayashi in the Wiley-Japan office by facsimile: 81 3-5689-7276 or by E-mail:editorial@wiley.co.jp for more information. Please name the Wiley journal to which you are submitting your manuscript.
Charges for color
For all accepted manuscripts, there will be a charge to authors for color pages used in the print version of the journal. The charges are $250.00 (US dollars) for the first page of color and $500.00 (US dollars) for each subsequent page of color. There are no charges to the author when the illustration appears in black and white in the printed version of the journal. All figures submitted in color will appear in color in the online version of the journal at no cost to the author. We recommend the use of symbols, rather than color, for graphs and charts.
Cover photograph
The editors of Developmental Neurobiology will select a color photograph for the cover of each issue.
Print reproduction requires that files for full-color images be saved at 300 dpi in a RGB color space. If possible, profiles of your output device should accompany all digital-image submissions.
Organization of Manuscripts
Manuscripts must include a title page containing the title of the report, a running title of not more than 40 characters and spaces, contributor names(s) and institutional affiliations, corresponding author information, correct mailing addresses, telephone and fax numbers, E-mail addresses, and any notes, such as acknowledgments, sources of financial support, and notices of changes of address or death of an author. Authors must be matched to an institutional affiliation with an Arabic superscript numeral, and, in addition, the corresponding author must be identified with an asterisk. The online submission website contains pages where the author may enter this information.
All manuscripts, including contributions to special issues, must include an abstract. The Abstract is a single paragraph that states the principal results and conclusions in no more than 250 words. Next, five Keywords that are pertinent to all major points of the manuscript must be listed. The body of the manuscript should start with an Introduction that states the background for the research followed by Methods, Results, Discussion, and References sections. Divide long sections into smaller sections with subheadings. Center major headings, and use all upper-case letters. Underline subheadings, and place them at the left margin. Finally, type Figure Legends and Tables at the end of the manuscript.
Avoid using text boxes, linked text, hidden text, automatic numbering of references and lists, endnotes or footnotes, and all other forms of automatic formatting. Please do not place a hard return at the end of every line. These types of formatting are removed before print production, and this removal can produce errors.
Detailed information on style and preparation of manuscripts for Developmental Neurobiology is in Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers, 6th edition (1994, Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press. The Council of Science Editors maintains a website and has published online some chapters of the upcoming 7th edition).

Citations and References.
Only articles that have been published or are in press may be included in the Reference section. Authors are encouraged to rely upon citation of articles published in primary research journals.
Articles should be cited in the text as follows: “The experiments used have been described elsewhere (Smith, 1990).” or “The experiments of Smith (1990)….” or “Earlier experiments (Smith and Jones, 1999)….” Cite references to works by three or more authors as (White et al., 2000). Cite unpublished results (including articles submitted, but not yet accepted, for publication) or personal communications as such within the text and do not list these in the References section. When citing an online database, list the complete address of the URL. The URL must be included along with the date on which the authors accessed the database. For a complete set of instructions for citing and referencing online material see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/formats/internet.pdf This material is published by the National Library of Medicine (July 2001, accessed April 2003).
In the References section, articles should be arranged in alphabetical order according to the name of the first author. When listing multiple articles by the same authors, follow date order, from oldest to most recent.
See the sample references given below. Note that the journal does not use italics in the reference list. For author names, the journal does not use spaces or periods between initials.

Peer Review Scorecard Pilot
Developmental Neurobiology is participating in Wiley's pilot of transferable peer review in which reviewers complete a standard scorecard in addition to their usual review. Authors of original research articles rejected with completed scorecards will be invited to transfer the manuscript, reviews, and scorecard to any of the other journals participating in the pilot. Authors will have the opportunity to revise their manuscript according to the review comments prior to transfer if they wish to do so. A list of participating journals and more information about the pilot can be found here. We believe that this system of preserving original peer review for the next journal's use will decrease repetitious review, save authors, reviewers and editors valuable time and significantly increase the speed to publication for many papers.
